Suffering from a sore throat or an upset belly? Look no further than your kitchen for some amazing and effective natural remedies. Home-made remedies are my favourite way to ease many symptoms that make us feel unwell. They are inexpensive and easy to make and deeply rooted in tradition. I am excited to share with you how everyday kitchen foods can be turned into a healing remedy. Below are my top natural remedies that you can make at home.

1.Cold and Flu shot!

Fight off your common cold with this immune boosting flu shot. This recipe is my go-to when I feel a tickle in my throat or feel run down. It contains antibacterial garlic, warming and antiseptic ginger and soothing honey. I take this shot 3 times a day when I feel the winter cold coming on. ** Special note: the smell of the garlic can be strong, so make a flu shot for your partner or work colleagues and enjoy the natural goodness (and smell) together.

Recipe:

2 garlic cloves, crushed
1 tsp raw and organic honey
1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
30ml hot water

Mix all ingredients together and shot it down!

2. Sore throat solutions

Nothing is more soothing than a warm herbal tea to ease the pain and discomfort of a dry, sore or itchy throat. These following ingredients mixed together make my favourite sore throat remedy. Liquorice root is the star of the show, an inexpensive herbal tea that has anti-inflammatory and demulcent properties. Combine this with some Manuka honey and your throat will be singing again in no time!

Recipe:

Makes one comforting mug of tea

1 tsp organic liquorice root
1 generous spoon of Manuka honey
1 tea strainer
250ml boiling water

Add the liquorice root to the strainer and add boiling water. Wait for the water to cool slightly so it is not boiling and add in the Manuka honey. Sip slowly and enjoy.

Note: I never add Manuka honey to boiling water as the boiling water kills the natural antibacterial goodness of the honey.

3. Bloated Belly Relief

Relieve a bloated belly with a pantry staple, fennel seeds. Fennel seeds are very aromatic and contain fantastic anti-spasmodic and carminative properties (which can help you with unwanted gas!). Simply crush one teaspoon of fennel seeds and steep in boiling water for 10 minutes. Drink for instant digestive relief. This remedy is an absolute tummy saving winner!

4. No more nausea!

Glorious ginger is a wonderful natural remedy for nausea and travel sickness. This warming herb stimulates the digestive process and can help the ease the feeling of nausea pass by. Chew spicy ginger raw or steep ginger and drink it in tea form. The Ginger People Rescue has also put ginger into an easy tablet, which is a great alternative for kids suffering from travel sickness or tummy discomfort. Highly recommend keeping The Ginger People chews or tablet in the car on every road trip.

5. Itchy skin soother

Oats not only make one wholesome breakfast but can also be used to relieve inflamed and irritated skin. Oats (avena sativa) have an incredibly soothing and healing natural properties. An oat bath can help treat inflammatory skin conditions like sunburn, eczema and itchy skin. To make an oat bath add one cup of ground up oats into a clean sock or pouch and seal. Add the sock into your bath. Sit in the bath and enjoy the almost immediate skin relief.

Note: I would advise from pouring the oats directly into the bath as they can be difficult to clean.
